American Academy of Sleep Medicine: Sleep Medicine In-Training Exam

Welcome to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine's In-Training Exam

The AASM Sleep Medicine In‑Training Exam (SMITE) will be offered March 2 – March 13, 2026.

SMITE is an educational exam designed for fellows who are currently enrolled in an accredited sleep medicine fellowship program. It helps them prepare for the sleep medicine board certification exam by reflecting the scope and difficulty of the board exam and identifying knowledge gaps to guide focused study.

Modeled on the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Sleep Medicine Blueprint, for the sleep subspecialty certification examination, it provides a comprehensive overview of sleep medicine topics. The online format includes official timing, question flagging, and comparative data.

To better reflect the board exam environment and improve predictability of board success, 2026 will maintain recent exam administration changes. The exam will be offered March 2–13, 2026.

Programs must select one exam date and start time. All fellows within a program must test together, at the same location, with a proctor present.

Program registration opens Friday, December 5, 2025 at https://intraining.aasm.org/

When registering, please have the following information available:

  • Preferred exam date and time (be sure to choose the correct time zone)
  • Start time - (7:00 AM–5:00 PM; exam duration approximately 4 hours)
  • Proctor name and title

In addition to fellows, SMITE is a valuable resource for program directors, providing performance data to compare fellows’ scores within and across programs, assess program performance, and track fellow progress longitudinally to support educational planning. The exam is not intended as a primary evaluation or grading tool for Milestones or other program requirements.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

PROGRAM ADMINISTRATORS

Online registration begins December 5, 2025, and will remain open until the last day the exam is offered on March 13, 2026.

The program administrator must have the correct name and email address of each fellow who will take the exam. The proctor’s name, title, and email address are also required.

Register your program by logging into https://intraining.aasm.org. Program administrators must first choose an exam date and time for all fellows to take the exam at the same time and in the same location. Please be sure to choose the correct time zone.

Once your program is registered, you will be prompted to invite fellows. The screen will say, “Purchase Licenses,” but there is no charge for fellows to take the exam. Enter the total number of licenses needed and then issue a license to each fellow. When the license is assigned, fellows will automatically receive an email prompting them to register for the exam. Fellows must register for the exam prior to exam day.

There is no charge to the program or fellow to take the exam.

The proctor will receive an email with the exam start and end times, a copy of Proctor Instructions, and a copy of Fellow Instructions. Fellows receive an email with a link and access code prompting them to register for the exam. After a fellow registers, they will receive a copy of the Fellow Instructions.

Program Administrators can log in to the website (https://intraining.aasm.org) and view which fellows have registered by clicking on the “Licenses” tab located near the top of the screen. If a fellow has not yet registered, their name will appear in red. Encourage fellows to register as soon as they receive their registration email. The username and password fellows use to register for the exam are the same login credentials needed to access the exam on test day.

Fellows receive two (2) exam reminders. A reminder is sent one week before the exam, and a second reminder is sent one day before the exam.

To reissue a license, log in to https://intraining.aasm.org and click on “Reissue License.” Fellows must register prior to exam day.

To change your Proctor choice, login to https://intraining.aasm.org and click on “Exam Information”. From that page, proctor information can be edited. When proctor information is updated, the program administrator and proctor will receive an email with exam instructions.

To change your program’s exam date and/or time, log in to https://intraining.aasm.org and click on “Exam Information”. From there, the exam date and time can be adjusted. Be sure to choose the correct time zone.

At the program’s designated exam date and time, fellows should log in, enter the username and password they created when they registered for the exam, and the exam will appear on their screen.

No. Proctors must be impartial with no established relationship with the fellows. For this reason, program directors and supervisors are not appropriate exam proctors due to the supervisory nature of their position. Being a friend, relative, supervisor, or fellow student would also disqualify a person from serving as proctor. Program coordinators, administrative assistants, and graduate assistants make good proctors.

The fellow and program administrator will be able to view individual results as soon as a fellow completes and submits their exam.

National program results will be available the week following the conclusion of the exam. To access results, log in to https://intraining.aasm.org. National scores and rankings will be located below your Program Statistics.

Fellows should take the exam one time only, closest to the end of their training.

FELLOWS
